Mission and strategy

Alliander develops and operates energy networks. Through our cables and pipes, over three million Dutch households and companies are supplied with electricity, gas and heating. We operate a 90,000km electricity grid and a 40,000km gas network, and we take great pride in our networks being among the world’s most reliable. Our 7,000 colleagues make sure the lights are on, homes are heated and businesses can keep operating.

Our mission

We are driven by the social importance of keeping energy reliable, affordable and accessible for everyone.

  • Reliability

Our customers need to be able to rely on maximum safety and continuity in their energy supplies, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is what drives us to put safety first in our working practices and try to avoid planned and unplanned energy outages as much as possible.

  • Affordability

We want our customers to pay as little as possible for their reliable energy supply, and so we work ceaselessly every day to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our operations.

  • Accessibility

Our customers need to be able to make their own energy choices. This is why we enable customers to choose their own supplier and service providers and to feed power back into the grid. Plus, we actively help customers switch to renewable forms of energy.

The world around us is changing rapidly and the energy transition is in full swing. Wind turbines, solar panels, EV charging stations, heat pumps: the Netherlands is switching to an energy system with large volumes of locally generated power and more different kinds of energy. As a result, gas networks, power grids and district heating networks may differ on a local level and will, therefore, need to be designed from a local perspective as well. Alliander plays a key role in this, together with local councils, provincial authorities and the national government. With our knowledge and skills, we are helping the Netherlands make the right choices in the energy transition.

Alliander focuses on four mainstays in making our mission a reality today and in the future:

  1. Helping customers make choices
As customers increasingly influence the energy system, it is ever more important to make it attractive for customers to make choices that not only work out well for them, but also for the overall energy supply. It should be attractive for customers to consume energy when supplies are plentiful, feed power back into the grid when supplies are low, and use the energy network as little as possible during times of peak load.
  2. Investing in new open networks
We build new open networks to make it possible in every local situation to choose the best option in terms of sustainability and (minimising) costs to society. It is crucial for this new infrastructure to be accessible to everyone on equal terms, i.e. open. This will increase the affordability of the networks as costs need to be able to be shared with as many users as possible. Facilitating the market is simply part of our role in society.
  3. Digitalisation
New technology, both hardware and software, is an unprecedented enabler in operating our networks, and in preventing or troubleshooting outages. Technology also enables us to better target investments in our networks, based not on standard calculation rules, but on the actual condition of our networks.
  4. Excellent network management
Our energy networks are among the world’s most reliable, and we will make sure it stays that way in the future. We also want to keep increasing convenience for our customers whenever we are out working for them. Our customers’ trust is important to us, both in performing our current day-to-day operations and in developing new activities.
