Alliander’s 2030 CO₂ targets officially approved: an important step toward a sustainable future

11 December 2025
Alliander has received official approval for its CO₂ targets for 2030. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) confirms that these goals are in line with the 1.5 degrees scenario of the Paris Climate Agreement. With this approval, Alliander meets the strictest international standards for reducing its CO₂ footprint.

Science Based Targets initiative

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a global initiative that supports companies set climate targets based on scientific evidence. More than 11,000 companies worldwide have joined the initiative. Although SBTi approval is not mandatory, it is the most logical and ambitious choice for Alliander.

Walter Bien, Chief Financial Officer of Alliander“I am proud of this milestone. The approval of our targets by SBTi confirms that we are coupling ambition with action. Together with our partners, we are working on solutions such as leak detection vehicles to reduce methane emissions, and on using more sustainable materials for cables and assets. In this way, we continue to contribute to broad prosperity, now and in the future.”

The new climate targets

In the coming years, Alliander will significantly reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions. This will be achieved by reducing methane leaks, detecting fraud and consumption without contracts, electrifying company vehicles, and sustainable buildings.

For indirect emissions from purchased energy (scope 2), Alliander aims to cover the electricity required for grid losses and operations completely by green energy in 2030. As a grid operator, electrical network losses are an unavoidable effect of distributing electricity through our grids. According to SBTi guidelines, the CO₂ emissions caused by this “lost” energy must be reduced and compensated. This will be achieved by limiting avoidable grid losses and purchasing green energy.

Collaboration with partners and suppliers

Two targets have been set for value chain emissions (scope 3): reducing the distribution of gas to our customers in line with agreements on fossil fuels in the climate accord and making our supply chain more sustainable. Alliander has set the goal that by 2030, 80 percent of its suppliers will have science-based targets or comparable objectivesAlliander calls on suppliers to work together to achieve these international climate goals.

Visit the SBTi website to view the confirmation of the targets. In the coming years, progress on these new targets will be reported in Alliander’s annual report.
