Gerard Penning appointed new member of the Alliander Supervisory Board

Alliander’s shareholders have approved the appointment of Gerard Penning as a member of the Supervisory Board. Mr Penning was recommended to the Supervisory Board as a candidate by the Works Council under their ‘enhanced right of recommendation’. He will be appointed for a period of four years with effect from 1 February 2021.

Chair of the Alliander Supervisory Board Annemarie Jorritsma says, ‘We are very pleased to be able to welcome Gerard Penning to the Supervisory Board. With his extensive management experience and specific knowledge in the field of human resource management and sustainable energy supply, he can make a significant contribution to the Supervisory Board’s supervision of Alliander’s operations’.

Gerard Penning (born 1963) started his career at Shell in 1990, where he held various management and board positions in the areas of Retail, Marketing & Sales and HR. From 2013 to mid-2020 he was Executive Vice President of HR Downstream at Shell. In 2020, he switched to ABN AMRO Bank, holding the position of Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). He is also a member of the Executive Committee at ABN AMRO. In addition to his work for ABN AMRO, Mr Penning has been a member of the Administrative Board of the international organisation Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) since 2018.

Concerning his appointment, Mr Penning has this to say: ‘Alliander has an important role to play in the energy transition, a social role that requires excellent collaboration skills and a culture that is open to new and innovative solutions. The company has the knowledge, technical know-how and insight needed to address the complex issues that abound right now. With my experience in the energy sector, and in the field of human resources specifically, I look forward to being able to support and advise Alliander’s Management Board.’

Mr Penning will be joining the Audit Committee, filling the vacancy left by the departure of Govert Hamers in May 2020. With this appointment, from 1 February Alliander’s Supervisory Board will comprise Annemarie Jorritsma (Chair), Bert Roetert, Frits Eulderink, Thessa Menssen and Gerard Penning.
