Alliander as a
circular network operator
Many (critical) materials are needed for successful realisation of the energy transition. To ensure careful and responsible use of the raw materials available to us, we aim to better organise their inflow, use and outflow with consideration for people and the planet.
Our ambition
Our ambition is to procure 50% of our raw materials through circular procurement by 2030. This is in line with the Dutch government’s target. How do we intend to do that?
- We are working to cut the amount of primary raw materials we use by identifying opportunities for recycling, reuse or repurposing for each product stream, and then seizing those opportunities.
- In tendering procedures, we have included circularity as a core design and production requirement for the materials we procure.
- We now always require a raw material passport.
- Internally at Alliander, we have adopted the principle of ‘reuse, unless’ for all our materials.
Alliander
Circular
Within the Alliander organisation, we have a Circular team. This team aims to move Alliander towards 100% (re)use of the materials we truly need, thereby reducing our carbon footprint and increasing our carbon handprint. This involves working to reduce the residual waste our company produces, while creating a team environment with room for participation and reintegration.
A selection
of what we do
Repairing and overhauling materials
We are committed to reusing materials by repairing and overhauling them. This means we restore and recondition obsolete materials to give them a new lease of life.Identifying opportunities for repurposing
When we cannot continue to use materials ourselves, we actively go out and look for new uses outside our company.
Sharing knowledge with other network operators
We work closely together with other network operators to share knowledge and best practices on circularity. Working together enables us to be more efficient and effective in contributing to a circular economy.
Working together with suppliers and sheltered employment organisations
We actively seek collaboration with suppliers and sheltered employment organisations to find circular solutions. This can involve repair and overhaul, but also modifications to products to extend their service life.
Developing special material for complex issues
In our workshops, we design circular products based on innovative (complex) issues in our company to support and accelerate our engineers’ work.
